Men tend to not have as many accessorization options as the fairer sex - especially if you’re a guy who prefers the more classic aesthetics and don’t want your wrists or neck bogged down in metal. Beyond your everyday carry (wallet, key set, etc.), the one thing you have creative license with is what sits on your wrist - your watch.
What’s interesting is that most guys tend to overthink watches - either they pick the gaudiest, robocop-esque watch they can find or they find something that’s a little too ‘basic’, i.e. a tiny watch face with a spaghetti string band so it looks like they took it from their little sister.
Wearing an appropriate, flattering timepiece is a lot easier than you think - in fact you can really boil down your watch collection to three essential styles that can fit any occasion or situation.
1. The Brown Leather
I can’t say it enough - this is my favorite type of watch, and I tend to wear mine religiously. The beauty of the brown leather watch is its versatility - it can be casual, formal, and a lot of things inbetween. Some guys go with black leather, but I advise brown since it’s neutral enough to go with almost every outfit in your wardrobe.
Shinola has made a rather hefty splash in the fashion community recently, and probably because their watches are not only of high quality but the narrative behind their Detroit roots is hard not to love. I’m a fan of the Runwell Coin Edge, which is a nice brown leather band with a nice neutral face and a lovely gold finish. You can go with any of their other styles, but I chose this one since I’m a sucker for gold
2. Summer Cloth Band
With the rising temperatures of spring and summer, it’s a good idea to have a versatile cloth band watch you can pair with multiple outfits. This watch type not only looks appropriate for the weather and season, but unique color combinations can give a normal outfit a nice pop of detail.
I am a big fan of Daniel Wellington watches due to their classic style, flat lay on the wrist, and very affordable prices. The Classic Canterbury is a great option for any mens summer look, particularly since you can wear any of the three colors (blue white or red) and have it work with any outfit sporting those tones.
3. Gray Metal Band
For those more formal occasions or evening events, every guy should have a watch with a metal band - preferably gray since its neutral tones go well with a variety of materials, colors, and looks.
Larsson and Jennings tends to be my watch of preference, mostly due to their very minimalist and clean designs. There’s no muss or fuss to the aesthetics of it, and the fact that it’s not dripping with dials or knobs draws more attention (in a good way) to it. The CM Silver model is also capable of pairing with almost any suit, outfit, or look you’re going for.
